Being an IT consultant, I’ve had the privilege of working with a wide range of customers across various domains - both public and private sector. Each environment presents its own unique challenges, but what remains constant is the importance of finding motivation and even excitement in every new domain. Whether I’m dealing with agriculture, industrial equipment, or social welfare organisations, each experience has taught me valuable lessons. Here's how I get enthusiastic and approach these opportunities with a positive, curious mindset.

Embrace the story behind the domain

One of the most exciting aspects of consulting is the exposure to completely different industries. For example, I’ve had the chance to work with Finnish dairy and beef cattle farmers. It may not seem thrilling to everyone at first glance, but when you consider the larger picture, it’s incredibly motivating. Contributing to traditional agriculture and food production helps sustain a part of Finnish culture while also engaging with modern sustainability efforts. Besides, cows are cool!

In one instance, I worked on an environmental calculator to support the reduction of climate change impacts. Through this project, I saw how technology can make a significant difference in traditional sectors. It’s fascinating to learn how innovation can blend with long-standing practices to create a more sustainable future.

Shift the focus to people

In another project, I was working with a company that produces industrial equipment. Admittedly, machinery and equipment manufacturing isn’t something that immediately sparks excitement in everyone. I took it as an opportunity to help Finnish company to gain competitive edge in selling top-notch products globally.

Furthermore, it’s not always about the product or service itself. It’s about helping the people who work with it. This international company brought together professionals from diverse backgrounds. Helping them improve their processes and achieve an advantage through technology gave me even deeper sense of purpose.

Recognise the bigger picture

One of the most fulfilling projects involved working with funds allocated to social and welfare organisations. It’s easy to get caught up in the technical details, but what kept me motivated is realising how essential these organisations are to society. Supporting these efforts helps ensure that critical functions—ranging from healthcare to education—operate efficiently.

In my work with public sector clients, I also strive to help them reduce bureaucracy. By finding ways to be more agile and responsive, I contribute to making public services more accessible and efficient. Knowing that my work directly impacts the well-being of individuals and communities gives me a motivational boost.

The key motivators: People, Curiosity, and Significance In every project, regardless of the domain, core motivators and sources of enthusiasm are:

  • People: The experts in their own field who rely on my expertise to improve their work. Learning from them and understanding their needs is incredibly rewarding.
  • Curiosity: Each new project is an opportunity to explore something unfamiliar. By staying curious and open to learning, even the most unfamiliar domains can become fascinating.
  • Significance: Whether it’s enhancing competitiveness, improving sustainability, or supporting society’s essential functions, understanding the impact of your contribution is essential.

And when all else fails, let’s not forget the practical motivator: money. Customers pay good money for our services, and it’s our responsibility to ensure they get value for their investment. This reality serves as a constant reminder to stay driven and deliver the best results.

Final thoughts

No matter the domain, consulting provides an opportunity to make a difference in various industries. Whether it’s connecting with the people behind the projects, satisfying your curiosity, or understanding the broader significance of your work, there’s always something to get excited about. And that’s what makes consulting not just a job, but a continuously rewarding journey.
